What is your child’s learning style?

WHAT IS YOUR CHILD’S LEARNING STYLE?

By April Thompson, LMFT

Did you know that children learn in different ways, and one child’s learning style might be different than another?  Typical public school in America is based on the auditory (lecture) format.  What if your child’s primary learning style is something else though?   If this is the case, you might find that your child has difficulty paying attention, is easily distracted, becomes disruptive, and/or is frequently moving around in his/her seat.  Hmm, this sounds a bit like ADHD.   So what are the other learning styles?  Montessori schools do a great job emphasizing all the styles.  Think about the 5 senses and this will give you a better idea:  Hearing, Sight, Touch, Smell and Taste.

Hearing style:   Lecture format focuses on hearing.  These learners do great in the classroom and are able to stay focused easily.  Auditory learners do well when there is classical music playing in the background and respond well to verbal praise.

Sight style: Visual learners do great in a classroom where the teachers uses visual aids (whiteboard, projector screen, videos, book in front of the child, pictures, etc.) When stressed, at home, writing them an affirmation note or drawing them a picture might help them feel better.

Touch style:  Touch focus learning is known as kinesthetic where hands-on activities are great for these learners (finger paints, crafts, science projects, building things, etc.) If a child has this learning style and has a hard time focusing on lecture, it can help if they have a squishy ball to hold onto.  These children at home tend to gravitate toward tactile objects and enjoy feeling various textures.   They may have had a special blanket or stuffed animal when they were younger and loved to bundle up in covers.  When stressed, giving them a back rub, a bath, brushing their hair, or putting lotion on their arms and legs works well.

Smell and taste style:  Smell and taste focus usually are categorized in the sensory oriented child.  This is the child who is always putting things in their mouth or loves to smell things.  In the classroom, it’s hard to accommodate for these learners, but one suggestion that helps is letting them have approved snacks to chew on throughout the day.  These children do great with activities that include making edible items, or working with things that have various scents.  When stressed at home, they might benefit from aromatherapy, spritzing their bedding with a linen spray, or using scented plug-ins.   Lavender is a great calming scent.  They also love getting sweet treats.

Taking this into consideration, knowing your child’s learning language can also help you with discipline and meeting their developmental and emotional needs.  For example, a kinesthetic child who is being defiant probably won’t listen to you telling him what to do, unless you get down to his level, look him in the eyes, and put your hand on his arm or shoulder then tell him what you need him to do.

If you child exhibits extreme obsessions with any of the senses or has reactions to certain senses, you might want to have them evaluated.  Autism spectrum disorders often display exaggerated aversions to taste, smell, and center tactile sensations and textures.   They also often exhibit visual obsessions with shiny or lighted objects.  ADHD is a disorder that affects a child’s ability to focus on auditory and visual processes.

Clear as a Bell!

We just got this new baby monitor and it ROCKS!   Our old Summer video one was SUPER static-y, and after two years, one night it just stopped working.  It was the best thing to happen to us, because I didn’t realize how bad it was until I got this new Safety 1st High Def Monitor!  For the first time in a long time, Iam the one sleeping like a baby!    I used to get woken up periodically throughout the night, not by my daughter, but by the static and constant noise on our monitor.   I went online and found some consumer reviews that said this one was a great choice one for its value and clarity.  It uses new DECT 6.0 technology, which means zero interference, static, noise and won’t pick up your neighbor’s phone calls!   It is literally clear as a bell and has a range of 1000 feet.    If you are sick and tired of your static-y monitor, I can’t more highly recommend this one.  And, at roughly $59.99 it is a total deal!   We got ours at Babies R Us(in store, but they also sell online.)  Just Google “Safety 1st High Def Monitor” for lots of different sites that sell it.  I saw it from anywhere between $49.99 – $74.99.

I Was a Really Good Mom Before I Had Kids

If you answer “yes” to any one or more of the below questions taken from the book “I Was a Really Good Mom Before I Had Kids” or if any of these simply make you laugh, I guarantee you will love this book!

QUIZ: Does this sound like you? Check all that apply.

* You secretly wish you had your own apartment.
* If you have to play Go Fish one more time, you will definitely poke your eyeballs out.
* You lie to your friends about how much babysitting help you have.
* Next time your husband goes to Home Depot to “help” you, you think he should just stay there.
* You feel guilty that you like going to work so much.
* You worry whether your son’s lunch box is the “right” one.
* You dread the question “What do you do all day?”
* You consider a trip to the dentist as your special “alone time.”
* You plan to get control of your life…next week.
* Reading before bed feels like a luxury.
* You find that slowly browsing the aisles at Target, by yourself, is better than therapy.

When I first heard the title of this book, it really made me laugh out loud, because that is how I feel about ME! Before I had a child, I really thought I had it all figured out.  MY kids would never scream in the background when I was on the phone or throw a tantrum in the store.  I would simply give them “the look” and they would KNOW they needed to behave.  Then I had one, and I was in for the shock of my life! I was not prepared for my child to enter the world with her OWN spirit and opinions and strong will.   I was also not prepared for how hard parenting (or trying to parent well) would be.  It is not easy, and many times I wonder if I am doing the right thing.  Especially with discipline.  There have been many times when I felt insecure and lost and some days (you know those days, the bad ones) I have ended the day feeling completely DEFEATED.  What I loved about this book is that it looks at mothering in a really honest way.  The authors interviewed lots of other moms, and some of the things they confessed had me shouting, “I feel that way too!”  The book gives great tips on embracing modern motherhood -  mostly importantly learning to lighten up on the expections we put on ourselves, stop comparing ourselves to others, and subsequently starting enjoying it more.  A truly must read book for any modern mama.  Hey, read it before bedtime for a luxurious end to your day, and consider it therapy, much like cruising the Target aisles alone!   :-)

Mama J by J Brand

With this pregnancy, I knew one thing would be different.  I was not going to fight the transition into maternity clothes and waste one day being remotely uncomfortable.  So, the moment I started squishing myself into my regular jeans, I went out and splurged and bought one pair of Mama J maternity jeans by J Brand, and they are the best thing to happen to my pregnancy wardrobe.   Luckily since I do not have to go into an office or see the same people, I can pull off wearing these jeans every day or every other day!  And, they can go both ways, casual OR dressy.

I had a designer pair of denim with my first pregnancy, but I did not like them one bit.  They had that big piece of fabric and tight elastic band that went high up around my waist.  They were super uncomfortable, and I was bummed I spent the money on them.   I ended up looking like a stuffed sausage, because the elastic band would bunch in around my waist (up high) and you could even see it through form fitting shirts.  Not cute.

These jeans are totally different.  There is no fabric around your middle. The waist is low cut (falls below your belly), but the back is cut higher so there are no plumber moments.   The maternity elastic fabric is stitched into both sides right above the pockets.   They are made of close to 100% lyrca, so there is a ton of stretch, you almost feel like you are wearing sweats.  Plus, the way they are cut, I think I am going to be able to wear these throughout unlike my former pair, which I quickly outgrew the day my belly couldn’t stay in that elastic fabric anymore!

I got mine at Xpecting Maternity in Costa Mesa.  They are having a huge anniversary sale starting today, where tons of stuff in the store is 40% off.   Unfortunately, not these awesome jeans, but let me tell you, they are worth every penny.   If you are pregnant, you must check out this store!

Have a great weekend everyone!  See you back on Monday!
