Dohm Sleep Conditioner

For anyone looking for the best white noise machine for babies and kids, I wanted to share with you a favorite recent find called the Dohm Sleep Conditioner.

I have used sound machines with both my kids since birth.  I am a big believer in sound conditioning for sleep, and that sort of Pavlov-dog type of association with a certain noise and sleepy time.

The Dohm is made by Marpac, a company that has been around for 50 years, and the creator of the original sound conditioner. This model was also selected as the Official Sound Conditioner of the National Sleep Foundation.  You don’t get a bigger seal of approval than that!

I was sent the Dohm Sleep Conditioner for review and now use it with my three-year-old Morgan and it has worked beautifully.  Her room is closer to our main living area AND she still naps, so this sound machine has worked like a charm to cut out additional noise from big sis in the afternoons.

It is also useful to drown out the neighbor’s 50-somethin’ garage band practice. We have the Dohm to thank for sparing her from renditions of “I Saw Her Standing There” and “Time of the Season” which goes on until 10pm every Thursday night. Don’t even get me started.

The machine is not fancy, but doesn’t need to be. It features a dual speed (high and low) and you can twist it to adjust to your desired level of noise at each level. When turned on, it creates the sound of rushing air, or “white noise” and is not only great for the kiddos, but if you have a snoring spouse!

[Disclosure: I was sent the Dohm Sound Conditioner complimentary to try out since I am a big believer in using a white noise machine with kids. This is not a compensated post, and my opinions are 100% my own! I highly recommend this product! I think I now need to buy one for my older daughter as well.]

I have this for my 20 month old. We have been using it since we discovered it when she was about 2 months old, and it is wonderful! I think some people worry that this is a negative sleep association device, but it is the opposite. People sleep better and deeper with it since they aren’t distracted/woken up by other noises (we have a barking dog, for example). So glad you wrote this post!

I wouldn’t see it as a negative sleep association device in the least! I totally agree – it just drowns out all those outside noises that can disrupt the sleep cycle.

I think for babies and kids, this is a must have!

      Thanks for your comment!

Just curious, why do you recommend it over the other one you used before by Homemedic(and I subsequently purchased and use now!)??

This is my first time using a white noise machine with constant humming vs the ocean or “spa sound” options. I think the constant white noise of the Dohm is more effective in drowning out noises, like our neighbor’s newly started band, but I used the Homedics SoundSpa for years and also liked it and found it effective.

The Homedics is sold at a lower price point, so it is also a good option for people that are looking to spend less.

Both are good options, I just feel with the noises in our house that we currently need to drown out, the constant white noise and humming of the Dohm has been really helpful for us.

But if you are looking for sleepy time, soothing sounds, I think the Homedics is great too.

      Hope this helps!

We use white noise machines with our girls and love them. So great in our smaller home.

I must say, this sound machine is amazing. I hadn’t slept with one until about a year ago when I stayed at my cousin’s house and it’s great. When our son was born 9 months ago we bought a sound machine for his room and we have loved it. Perfect for kids and inexpensive. I have it on my blog: http://www.daddylifestyle.com/2013/10/why-your-baby-will-love-sound-machine.html

    Thank you for sharing 🙂
