We Accept Credit Cards

see more by

This is my daughter Emma’s (center) first year selling Girl Scout cookies and let me tell you, now that you have to buy the boxes in advance prior to selling, we had some serious cookies to sell! Her friend’s mom signed up for a super cool site called SquareUp.com which allowed us to accept credit cards at last weekend’s cookie stand. I tell you, it is truly the Girl Scouts of the next generation.

People got the biggest kick out of the sign along with the sticker they were able to adhere to the Lakeshore cash register.

Upon investigation, I ended up signing up for my own SquareUp.com account for my business. Once you sign up, they will mail you a free Mobile Card Reader. There is a $0 monthly fee, and it is 2.75% per swipe. For bigger companies, there is also the option to pay a flat fee of $275 monthly with 0% per swipe.  Manually entered cards cost 3.5% + $0.15 per transaction.

Once you get your free card reader, you download the free app on your iPhone, iPad or Android and link to your bank account. Plug in the reader and you’re ready to take payments, and money is deposited next day.

I thought this was a cool service to pass on, especially if you are a mom that organizes events and want another way to collect money vs. tracking down checks! Or, for small business owners that want a new way to accept credit cards with a flat rate, so after that, what you sell is what you keep.

The reader works with Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover.

Now, anyone want to buy some cookies?! We take credit cards! LOL…

Weeknight Family Dinner Conversation Starter

see more by

Recently I took my girls for a family dinner at my girlfriend’s house where they had the cutest weeknight family dinner conversation starter I wanted to share with you. We now do this with my family each night and provokes some interesting conversations!

It’s simple.

Everyone (including mom and dad) goes around the table and answers the following:

What was your thumbs up part of the day?
What was your thumbs down part of the day?
What was your thumbs middle part of the day?

I thought these questions were great, because everyday really does consist of all the above ~ the good, the bad and the so-so.

I made a free printable of these questions for your kids to fill out if you would like a little activity to keep them busy in the 10 minutes while you are trying to get everything on the table!

Do you have any fun table topics or conversation starters you do with your family? Please share!

Best Thermometer for Kids: Exergen TemporalScanner

see more by

Last week our house got hit with the flu. Bad. When my inaccurate thermometer was to blame for an unnecessary trip in to see the doctor, I realized I have GOT to find the best thermometer for kids. Stat.

Having the most accurate thermometer for kids might just be the most important tool in Dr. Mommy’s medicine cabinet. Make sure to enter to WIN one in our giveaway below!

By a brilliant stroke of luck, that same week, a representative from Exergen TemporalScanner contacted me to see if I would be interested in doing a review on their temple scanner thermometer, which is supposed to be the easiest way to take your kid’s temperature.

I wrote back YES as fast as I could.

First the story of what happened when my six-year-old daughter got the stomach flu. It was horrendous, she was so sick, and feverish. So I searched for our old digital thermometer, and not knowing where it had been in the past (ahem, we had it since she was a baby), I thought it best to take it under her arm.

The number kept climbing and climbing til it reached 103.5. Then I erroneously ADDED a degree, as I thought the arm pit was the one where you added a degree, so I thought she had temperature of 104.5, which freaked me out a little.

Since she couldn’t keep anything down, including a fever reducer, I took her into the doctor’s where her temperature there was 101. Yes, a fever, but not a 104.5 fever. And I cursed that stupid thermometer!

When my Exergen TemporalScanner arrived this week I think I  heard the angels sing, because this product is seriously the answer to Dr. Mommy’s prayers.

It is so easy to use, which is exactly what a mom needs in the throes of dealing with a sick little one.

I popped the battery in, put the TemporalScanner on her forehead, pressed the scan button and then moved it from the center of her forehead across to her hairline for 2 seconds and voila! I was done and had a digital readout of her temperature in 2 seconds!

The Exergen TemporalScanner infrared thermometer is able to gauge body temperature by capturing the naturally emitted heat from skin over the temporal artery, which runs across the forehead and is directly connected to the heart.

Accordingly to the company, research proves this is amongst the most accurate way to test for fever in all ages and is certainly the least invasive.

Tests show it is accurate to within + 0.2° F – which is more accurate than taking the temperature any other way.

If ONLY this had existed when my kids were babies. It truly is a must-have for any mom. In fact, this is going to be my gift for when a new baby arrives. Forget another darn outfit, a kinder, gentler thermometer is what a mommy needs!

If you couldn’t tell, so I will say it again, I LOVE THIS PRODUCT. They are available at stores like Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Costco, Babies R Us, Toys R Us and Sam’s Club nationwide.

Hooray! It’s a Tiny Giveaway! Enter to win your chance to win a Exergen TemporalScanner. Good luck!

[Disclosure: I received a complimentary TemporalScanner to facilitate this review. LUCKY ME.]

Where to Go to Play in the Snow in So Cal

see more by

This post about where to go to play in the snow in So Cal is written by guest blogger, Daley Erickson. She has a ton of great info on making a day trip from OC to see the snow. Here is what she writes…

“Admittedly, I am not much of a snow person. Given a choice, I am probably more of an “order drinks with umbrellas by the pool while the kids splash” kind of girl.

However, if my 3 1/2 year old Avery dressing Barbie up like a snow bunny and my almost-7 year old Ethan attempting to “sled” down the stairs on a box top are any indication, I believe my “get out of the snow free” pass is officially up. It’s time for this Orange County family to suit up in snow gear or ship out!

Luckily in our amazing nook of the world, it truly is possible to drive from 70 degree warm weather to literally 20 degrees and snow falling about an hour and a half away. So last weekend I set out to get the snow party started. With a little prep and planning, we made some amazing snowy memories and I have a feeling the winter games are just beginning.

So what do you need and where do you go for your first OC Snow Outing?

Every mom I talked to told me that if we all stayed warm, we would have a MUCH better time and the snow party would last for much longer. Nothing like soaking wet socks, damp clothes or cold hands to cut the fun short. I was lucky enough to borrow most everything we needed from a friend. Boots, ski pants/ jumpers, parkas, gloves, extra socks, scarves and hats are the most paramount. Everything kept us warm and toasty.

Considering that you may only use these clothes a few times a year, borrowed, discount or gently used clothing is a great way to go.

If you want to purchase new items for the family, P.F. McMullin Co. in Santa Ana is a great place to grab good quality discount gear.

Newport Kids Consignment in Costa Mesa is another good option for gently used jackets and other items. They accept only higher-end brands, so you will find up-date-styles at highly discounted rates.

Weather and Route

Make sure you check the weather and find out which local spot would be ideal for your day trip. Are the roads open? Is your car equipped with chains? Do you want to head to a snow park with lifts and tubing/sledding zones or just find a fluffy fun spot of your own on the mountain? Here are some great areas and the toll #s to call to check conditions, map your plan and map your route.

Big Bear (800) 427-7623
Mt. Baldy (909) 981-3344
Mountain High (888) 754-7878
Crystal Lake (626) 335-1251

I would recommend printing out directions once you decide on your destination outside of OC. Cell phone coverage is spotty or not available once you are in the mountains.

Comforts of home

Pocket hand and boot warmers, carafes of hot chocolate, sleds and snow discs can all serve to make the experience more comfy, special and exciting. They will never forget that amazing day sledding down the hill and the nice warming cup of cocoa mom had back at the car after.

You can find fun fancy stuff for winter trips at REI in Tustin.

We headed to the beautiful recreational area at Crystal Lake which was about 1 ½ hour super easy drive.

The kids had snow ball fights, raced down the hills in sleds and just goofed off in the majestic scenery. It was SO FUN for all of us and the perfect simple day trip. For our next adventure, we will most likely try Snow Play in Big Bear.  They have a big tubing and sledding park that is action-packed, not to mention skiing and snow boarding for beginners and the advanced.

The awesome benefits of our first Snow Day:

Unplug:  There is zero cell or wi-fi coverage on the mountain, so we “unplugged” for a bit from our cells, ipads, kindles, etc.
Inexpensive: Once you have the gear, entertainment can be either free or very inexpensive
Enjoy Nature: Spectacular scenery in the great outdoors never hurts.
Active: Snow play is awesome active play in the freshest of mountain air! They will sleep wonderfully once they get home.
Family Memories: Nothing is better than snuggling with your sweet family back at home in the OC, laughing about all the fun times and great memories we made.

Our family’s love of Snow Days has just begun!”
