Spring Fashion for Kids

With Easter right around the corner, I thought it’d be fun to highlight a few of my favorite spring dresses for girls. The wonderful thing about there being so many beautiful options out there for girls is that you can really capture your little one’s personality. I know my daughter would love the butterfly dress from H&M  because she loves graphics and lots of color. Extra bonus … that adorable dress is only $9.95.

Here are the details on the rest of the dresses shown above.

from left to right Contrast Eyelet Dress from Gap, Dress with flower print from Zara, Gold Spot Dress by Seed Heritage, Colorblock dress by J.Crew, Lace Dress by Zara, Floating Floral Dress by J Crew, Blooming Lily Shift Dress by Tea Collection

Let’s Hear it for the Boy

But, we all know that girls are the easy ones! Finding cute, wearable clothes for our little guys is much more challenging. And, because I have one girl and one boy, I couldn’t do the easy part without also featuring some equally adorable picks for all the darling boys out there.

from left to right: Striped sweater vest from Tea Collection, Star shorts from H&M, Colorblock stripe tee from J.Crew, Linen white roll up pant from Old Navy, Rock N Roll long-sleeve t-shirt from City Threads, Striped yellow polo shirt from Zara, Chino style bermudas from Zara

My son is 6 and I can’t tell you how quickly he goes through his clothes (especially jeans/pants)! That’s why I’m always on the hunt for cute, unique pieces that don’t break the bank.

Do you have any favorite local or online shops you frequent to stock up on kid’s clothes? I’d love to hear about them!

Nike Free Obsessed

My girlfriend had been running around town in the cutest tennies – in this hot color – so I texted her for the scoop  before my trip to Carmel as I was wanting to pick up a super comfortable, but still fashionable, running shoe.

She wrote back Nike Freeslike walking on air!

So I immediately went on “Mission Nike Frees”and headed to the Nike Store in Crystal Court first.

I loved the feel of them all, but I had my heart set on a pink pair (Fireberry/Night Blue/Grey) which they did have in the store, but I found them in my size across the street at Nordstrom.

I seriously spend the better part of my day on my feet and these are the BEST shoes for running around town. The fun colors make them pop with a little somethin’ extra to make you feel just a tad cuter while doing those errands!

If you buy, like they suggest, go up a 1/2 size, they run small.

I am totally Nike Free obsessed.

Chicken Teriyaki Lettuce Cups Recipe

Last week Your Sus Chef Susanne whipped up the yummiest kid-friendly dinner recipe for chicken teriyaki lettuce cups that was featured on one of my favorite websites, red tricycle.

She had myself and my girls over for a weeknight dinner and even my picky six year old gobbled them up! Now that is what I call a successful kid-friendly dinner.

Now, admittedly, it is a low carb recipe, but it would be delightful with a side of jasmine rice or you can also sub and make soft tacos. YUM!

Click here  for the chicken teriyaki lettuce cups recipe on red tricycle.

Bon appétit!

From Knocked-Up to Knock Out: After Baby Workout DVD’s

I am sure all of us can relate to just how difficult it is to find time to exercise after a new baby arrives. Ugh.

Erica Ziel of Knocked-Up Fitness, a personal trainer specializing in fitness-infused Pilates and pre/postnatal fitness, gets it ~ she’s a mom of three herself.

Driven to help new moms everywhere go from knocked-up to knock out, she recently released a DVD set of After Baby Workouts you can do at home, on your own schedule, to help get you back into shape and feeling better in no time.

But I am going to let you in on a little secret…these After Baby DVD’s are for any mom.Erica recently sent me the set for review and I have been loving the workouts even though my “babies” are now almost 4 and 7!

They are quick, effective (I personally love the 20 minute Plyo butt sculpting segment for bikini season prep) and get the exercises in and get you done before you have a chance to complain. Promise.

With a combination of 10, yes TEN, different workouts ranging from 10-27 minutes, you can mix and match the segments you have time for based on your busy schedule and the areas you want to focus on.

And hey, like Erica says, a short workout is always better than no workout at all!

DVD 1 eases you into the beginner workout with core exercises focusing on Kegels more than crunches. Workouts include arm sculpting, squats and other conditioning moves.

When you are ready, DVD 2 will motivate you to the next level with more intermediate to advanced workouts, challenging your core with a focus on rebuilding abdominal strength.

As a bonus, the After Baby Workout DVD set includes a fabulous workout booklet which answers questions, provides tips and my favorite, includes a variety of weekly workout combinations so you have a guide to follow as far as a sample of which segments to do on which days.  It makes it really easy and also gives you a schedule to hold you accountable!

First, Middle, Baby: Observations on Birth Order

see more by

Through her experience as a family photographer, Kristin Eldridge has worked with a ton of families throughout the years. She mentioned to be how fascinating it is to watch how birth order plays a role in children, and how from what she has observed, there are definite common “first, middle, baby” personality traits.  This topic has always interested me, so I asked her to write a post on her casual observations. After you read, please share your insights below on your own kiddos!  Here is what she writes…

“My tendency to be type-A goes all the way back to pre-school.  I organized and re-organized the contents of my room and my need to please knew no end.  Growing up, I didn’t attribute these personality traits to anything much, but I guess it was clear I was a pretty stereotypical firstborn child.

Now after becoming a mom and working with hundreds of kids in my job, I’ve noticed that birth order plays a huge role in who we are as people.

Here’s what I have noticed… Oldest children take the lead from their parents and often have perfectionist tendencies.  Middle children can be more rebellious in nature and are good at negotiating.  Youngest children are typically carefree are great at making people laugh.

After doing a little research for this article, some of the reasons that children fall into these categories makes complete sense!

Because of the fact that new parents are sometimes stricter and a little more rigid with the first child, that child tends be an over-achiever.  Middle children see the oldest child mirroring their parents, so they might want to go in the opposite direction (for attention) which can be perceived as rebellious behavior.  The youngest child is raised by parents that have done this a time or two, so are raised in a more easy-going environment.  The youngest child shoulders less responsibility, so they have the ability to be more carefree.

These guidelines don’t always hold fast and true, but so many of the children I meet fall into the personality type of their birth order.

The older we get, the experience plays more of a role into our personality as experiences can change the way we view the world.  As I raise my kids, I try to build their natural strengths and challenge their weaknesses.

My oldest child is 12 and he falls into the typical firstborn category.  His perfectionism makes homework easy, but it makes any type of failure difficult to handle.  We have been trying to teach him that it’s okay to fail.  We can learn through failure, not through being perfect all the time.

My middle child has watched his older brother navigate life, so he’s a little more savvy.  When he bucks the system, we try to teach him how rules and guidelines are there for a reason.  Walking him through these situations help him to be his unique individual self, while living in a world that has lots of rules!

My youngest is very carefree and she has a messy room to prove it.  I’ve found that the biggest challenge with her is taking the time to teach her responsibility.  Even though it would be easier to let one of her older brothers help unload the dishwasher, it’s beneficial for her to learn everyday tasks.

Do you feel that your kids are affected by their birth order?  I’m curious to know if you parent each of them differently or if you have unique thoughts on how to help them be more well-rounded?”

Thanks Kristin, I will start the conversation below on how I think birth order plays a role with my two girls, would love to hear all of your opinions and observations as well!
