My Favorite Pregnancy Apps

Fun-Pregnancy-Apps

Today I want to talk about my favorite pregnancy apps!  When I was pregnant with my first 7 years ago, I don’t think I downloaded one pregnancy app.  Not one!  By the time I was pregnant with my son 4.5 years ago, I think I graduated to downloading a “contractions counter” app. Nothing fancy.  Now there are TONS of pregnancy apps out there, and I want to share a few of my top picks.

My Pregnancy Today/Baby Center – This helpful app tracks your pregnancy week-by-week, gives you nutrition tips, specialized tips for mamas, and also gives detailed explanations about what’s going on with your baby on a weekly basis. Plus, a kick tracker, contraction timer, tips for creating your baby registry, and a cool feature – a “browse” products section, where you can search for baby products by brand name and reviews.

Sprout – This is one of my favorite apps because it shows your baby’s progress in 3D images (which I think is really cool!).  It also gives weekly overviews, has an “organizer” tab (a place to type questions for your next doctor’s visits, weight tracker  – my least favorite feature, lol! – kick counter, a place for your to-do lists, etc.), and a place to journal.

MyBabyBeat – Okay, this is a pretty cool app that my mom told me about!!  It’s a fairly new app that allows you to try and find your baby’s heartbeat with your iPhone.  Confused?  Read the app’s description…

“All you need to do is take your iPhone out of its case, make sure your headset does not have an embedded microphone, switch to airplane mode, set the iPhone volume to the maximum level, and start listening to your baby!”

Disclaimer – this is absolutely not a medical app!  I am obviously not a doctor, and I recommend that you ask your doctor, if you’re worried about trying this app.  And obviously, if you can’t find your baby’s heartbeat with your phone, that’s not a definite medical indication that anything is wrong!  This is purely for fun…not to stress pregnant mamas more.

I will tell you…now that I’m 20 weeks (where is the time going???), I can actually pick up my baby’s heartbeat sometimes with this app.  And, it’s magical! The app walks you through instructions, and also lets you listen to a sample mom’s heartbeat, as well as a sample baby’s heartbeat, so you know what you’re looking for.  You can also read more FAQs here (just scroll down on the page).

Photofy – This is such a fun photo editing app!  I’m kind of obsessed.  I know there are a lot of photo editing apps out there, but I love the baby and pregnancy “stickers” and frames with this one…especially the adorable stickers that help you count your pregnancy weeks with the size of the baby (i.e. the baby is the size of a tomato, sweet potato, etc.).  Super cute.

WebMD Pregnancy – This app is great because it shows a 3D image per week, what you can expect at your next doctor’s appointment, tips of the day, a symptom tracker (heartburn, anyone???), all sorts of pertinent checklists to keep you organized, and a place to journal…just to name a few.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting – A classic book, and now a classic app! I use this one on a weekly basis, too.  You have your weekly report on how baby is doing and developing, a video explaining each week, a place to read different week-related pregnancy articles, access to community “bulletin boards” and forums, and a place to journal.

On a side note, I also used the What to Expect When You’re Expecting Fertility Tracking app before I got pregnant, and found it very helpful.

Full Term – This app is mainly meant to help you time contractions (but is also a “kick” counter, too).  Obviously I haven’t used it yet (still too early!), but I’ll give it a go once the the time comes.

And, this isn’t an app, but it is just too darn cute not to share!  It’s a little video cartoon clip of a baby growing in their mama’s tummy.  I saw it floating around on Facebook, watched it and loved it so much, I let my kiddos watch it.  And, they want to watch it over and over and over again.  It’s one of the cutest pregnancy sequence clips I’ve seen that I think is pretty kid-friendly.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

I recently had the opportunity to download a new, adorable kids’ reading app called KidZoo Books – an iOS app designed especially for kids that provides fun ebooks for kids – perfect for ages 2-8 years-old.

Created by an independent publisher based in Long Beach, KidZoo Books aims to provide ebooks that engage, entertain and educate young readers.

Fun ebooks for kids!

The KidZoo Books app is special because of its quality.

Once downloaded, your child will be looking at a fun kid’s “map,” that shows eight different book options they can choose from.  The first one, “Nimble Dr. Ned VS. The Spoon,”  is complimentary with the download…and then you have the option to purchase the other seven ebooks.

All the books are $1.99 – except for “My Brother And I,” which is 99¢, and “Cinnamon’s Busy Year,” which is $2.99. The bundle is priced at $10.99, which is the best deal!

Once your child reads “Nimble Dr. Ned VS. The Spoon,” they’ll want to play with more of the available stories.  That’s because each ebook has beautiful illustrations, background music, professional voice-overs, and interactive features.

There are three “read” modes, designed to grow with your child.

The first is “Auto-Play,” where your kiddo can just listen to the story.

The second mode is “Read to Me,” where your child can navigate forward and backward, as the story is being read out loud.

Finally, mode three is “Read Myself,” where the background music plays, but your child can read out loud (or silently to themselves), while navigating the pages.

The stories also have touch screen interaction, with sound effects.  Because what kid doesn’t love sound effects?!

Available ebooks on KidZoo Books

Here are the eight books you can read on this app:

Nimble Dr. Ned VS. The Spoon
How does a stuffy doctor get tricked by a silver spoon into helping a bumbling octopus?” Find out how, as Henrietta Meire narrates the story of Dr. Ned, who gets foiled at every turn by a clever little spoon, and learns a lesson in humility along the way.

My Brother And I
A younger brother has his doubts, but discovers his older brother really does love him after they are united against a bully. Dale E. Turner’s narration brings a story to life that may just bring a tear to your eye.

The Flight Of The Sunflower
A gentle breeze dislodges a tiny seedling from its sunflower mother, and sends it spinning through the air on a journey of discovery. Award winning illustration, soothing music and delicate narration by Graydon Schlichter, makes this story perfect for bedtime.

Don’t Let The Dead Bugs Bite
Jamieson Price narrates this ghostly tale of a terrified town as it reacts to ghoulish bugs who come back from the dead for a night of mischievous fun. Spooky music and sound effects top off this delightfully eerie romp!

Cinnamon’s Busy Year
Cinnamon and her friends, Tootie and Pip, enjoy the many holidays that make each month special, beginning with New Year’s Eve. Learn how cultural traditions shape holiday celebrations in this beautifully illustrated story with the upbeat narration of Katie Leigh.

The Moon Smiles Down
Henrietta Meire narrates this goodnight story of the moon watching over all creatures big and small as they prepare for sleep. Let your child drift into slumber as a soothing lullaby plays on after the story ends.

My Very Own Lighthouse
A little girl, with the help of her favorite toys, builds her very own lighthouse to help her daddy – a fisherman – make it safely home from sea. Vivid illustrations and Anna Kate Mohler’s narration, put the finishing touches on this tender story.

Swim, Swam, Swum
If you were a seal with a wild imagination, what kind of crazy adventures would you find yourself in? Join our slick seal in his madcap exploits, and learn how to conjugate verbs along the way. Delightful Caribbean music accompanies this story narrated by Anna Kate Mohler.

Knowzz App

There is nothing better than a personal recommendation or reference, right? Let me introduce you to a fabulous new free app called, Knowzz, which is designed to make your life so much easier!  The Knowzz app finds local services recommended by people you already know and trust:  your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues.

In the world of parenting, I think we tend to rely even more on recommendations from trusted sources.  Because we want the best for our kids.  Personally, I tend to ask for references in my mommy circle of friends and post questions on social media.

The Knowzz app now creates the opportunity for you to be part of peer-to-peer network that gives you access to trusted and recommended local service providers that you need immediately.

As a mama, think about all of the local services you or your family may use on a weekly/monthly/annual basis.

Here are just a handful – pediatricians, dentists, nutritionists, allergists, babysitters, yoga instructors, plumbers, pool services, pest control, hair salon, nail salon, attorneys, an accountant…and the list goes on and on.

No more scrolling down random online reviews (by people you don’t even know!), or having to poll your entire Facebook community to ask for a pediatric dentist recommendation in your own neighborhood.  Sounds good, right?!  Read more to see how to get started.

How does the Knowzz App work?

Knowzz is available for iOS and Android, and offers users (like you!) instant access to service providers that your friends use and recommend.

After you download the app, you will be asked to sync your contacts.  Don’t worry – Knowzz will not share your contacts.  They treat all contact information as strictly proprietary.  The app simply needs access to your contacts so that you can share recommendations within your peer group.

After your contacts are synced with the app, any business or services that you already have saved in your contacts will pop up – you can choose to give them a “thumbs up” and recommend them – or leave them unchecked if you would not like to recommend them.

Next, the app will surf your area for potential businesses, and you can start looking for what you need.  You can also start inviting your friends to join this free service too.

Think about it this way – the more friends that are on the app, the more trusted recommendations you will get…and be able to give in return!

What can I expect?

Knowzz is all about sharing positive recommendations.  This is not a platform for negative reviews…this is a community of local friends, neighbors and colleagues that will give you the “stamp of approval” on a local service you may need.

This is an online forum of people you trust…and a way to accrue a fantastic library of local recommended services.

I encourage you to download and check it out! I think this is such a cool idea, and can’t wait to put it into action for myself.  Just the other day I was polling my Facebook network for a recommended martial arts studio for my four-year-old…and this is exactly the type of thing that Knowzz app would be perfect for!

A Tiny Oranges Giveaway

Get excited, mamas!!!  Knowzz is hosting a Tiny Oranges’ giveaway of two $100 Amazon gift cards for new users “In the Knowzz” who download the app and get started by making 3 recommendations. Use the Rafflecopter form below for the download link and more entry options!
