Little girls and dance. It can almost be too cute to handle.

The tights, the tutus, the ballet pink leotards, the little ballet shoes. Heaven.  Admittedly, I might have been known to sign up my little girls for a dance class just to see them in the outfit!!! And the enjoyment and entertainment you get out of watching them in class is priceless.

But cute outfits and mommy entertainment aside, did you know there are many early childhood benefits of dance you might not have even thought of?  Here’s how little ones can benefit from the joy of dance.

Early Childhood Benefits of Dance

Young children primarily learn through physical and sensory experiences.

When children are provided with creative movement that involves the selection of movement choices, they develop knowledge, skill, and understanding.

Dance is a powerful ally for developing many of the attributes of a growing child. Children are naturally active and dance offers an avenue to expand movement possibilities and skills helping mature physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively.

Dance is an excellent form of exercise for total body fitness. The physical benefits are a greater range of motion, coordination, strength and endurance. This is accomplished through movement patterns that teach coordination and kinesthetic memory.

In addition to the physical benefits, dance enhances a child’s psychological health, emotional maturity and cognitive development.

Children of all ages enjoy the opportunity to express their emotions and become aware of themselves and others through creative movement.

Preschool age children will create movement spontaneously when presented with movement ideas. A class setting offers a structured outlet for physical release while gaining awareness and appreciation of oneself and others fostering social encounter, interaction, and cooperation while learning to work within a group dynamic.

Physical activity also promotes school readiness and literacy. To the young child, verbal language and movement are entwined.

The road to literacy involves the translation of movement expression and communication into words. Learning language and learning dance are not separate threads, but are woven together and incorporated into a fabric of communication and understanding leading to a greater development of literacy.

Team OC Dance Program

Team OC offers a wide array of dance instruction for children ages 2 and older. Preschool age children are introduced to ballet and tap in classes while school age children have an array of dance genre options to choose from including ballet, tap, jazz and hip-hop.

The program implements age appropriate progressive curriculum in a positive learning environment designed to teach dance fundamentals and further enhance the overall development of growing children. Classes offered Monday-Saturday.

Now that she is a part of the OCAD Dance Company, we see even more improvement on her technique. Her love of performing in front of crowds is amazing to watch, especially since she is so quiet outside of dance.

This program not only teaches the kids technique, but also has a very strong focus on the love of dance and performing.” ~ Gina, Costa Mesa

Mom! What’s For Dinner?

I got a little craft recently with this DIY meal planning board which has has revolutionized weeknight dinners and reduced the “what’s for dinner?” stress in our house.

It was silly simple to make, and I even include a free printable meal planning template. Read the how to below.
DIY-Meal-Planning-Board-

The inspiration for this DIY meal planning board came from a recent BBQ we went to at a friend’s house. She had this ADORABLE framed meal planning board on her kitchen counter and told me it had been a lifesaver for her family. Not to mention the money they were saving from not going out to eat last minute.

I asked her where she got it, and she told me it was an easy DIY project. Basically all you need is a cute picture frame, a piece of scrapbook paper and a dry erase marker.

Hmmm. I am not super crafty, but it seemed even I could do that!

DIY Meal Planning Board Supplies

1. Picture frame

I loved this one from Amazon:

 2. Scrapbook Paper

My friend had a super cute distressed wood scrapbook paper, so I attempted to find something similar in the gray tones with no luck at Michaels. However, I did find a distressed wood in brown tones. Here is a cute Barnwood Scrapbook Paper I found on Amazon if this look works for you.  The best part is, you can choose a paper/background to match your home decor.

 3. Free Printable Meal Planning Template

I created this free printable meal planning template -> CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD <- and all you have to do is cut the scrapbook paper to fit your printer, and print the template out on your paper of choice.

The scrapbook paper is so cheap you can buy a few designs and actually switch them out every now and again when you want a fresh look.

4. Dry Erase Marker

Last all you need is a Fine Tip Dry Erase Marker and you are good to go! My friend had hers attached to a string and mounted on the back, which is a great idea. I still need to do that. Then, when you are done with your weekly menu, simply erase and plan your new menu for the upcoming week.

5. Board or Frame Stand (If You Need One)

I have a pet peeve about picture frames falling or sliding when just using the built in cardboard stands, so I purchased this Two Wire Display Stand and love it! The white material grips to the surface of our kitchen counter top so it doesn’t slide around.

Happy menu planning!

I have great news!

Great News_1 I am so excited to share with all of you…I’m pregnant!

Wow.  That’s still so awesome (and a little weird!) to say, no matter how many times I say it or how many times I write it.

After 10 years of marriage, my husband and I are ecstatic to welcome our third baby this August.  Woo hoo!!  I am excited to share this journey with you, and take this opportunity to write more about pregnancy and babies!  Yes, as you can imagine, I have babies on the brain.

What I’m quickly realizing is that a lot has changed in the 4.5 years since I’ve been pregnant. A lot.  New gizmos, new trends, new debates, new terminology.  In other words, plenty of new blogs to write and explore!

But first, a little about my family and our announcement…

As you have probably gotten to know my family over the years, we are blessed with a beautiful 7 year-old daughter and 4.5 year-old son.  Who couldn’t be more excited and happy to have “their” new baby here this summer.

As we’ve started sharing this fantastic baby news with family and friends (it has been sooooo hard to keep quiet!), one of the first questions we have been asked (hesitantly) is if this was a (shhhh!!!) planned pregnancy.  It’s okay to ask us!  We won’t be offended, promise!  The answer?  It absolutely was.  We purposely decided to put an age gap between our 2nd and 3rd baby.  Because, well….we were exhausted.

I don’t mean a little tired.  I mean EXHAUSTED.  Our kiddos are about 2.5 years apart, and Elizabeth was still in diapers when Nathan was born.  It has been a crazy, amazing, loud, chaotic, fun parenthood journey, learning to navigate being a mom of two close in age.  The best, actually. But frankly, we needed a little break from the baby stage.  Just keeping it real, mamas.

I can totally relate to Susanne’s “To Third or Not to Third” post, because that was us.  We had “the talk,” about, oh, 450 times over the years. Ultimately, we decided that we LOVE being parents, LOVE our precious kiddos, and just saw ourselves having a big family.  And apparently, very little sleep – ha ha!

Because we are starting completely over (gulp).  Which is both very exciting and also terrifying.  Let’s start dragging out the 15,000 tupperware “baby bins” full of clothes, toys, blankies, etc., we’ve been storing in the garage forever!  (Yep, I kept everything, “just in case.” I bet you’re not surprised.)

I’ll have two in elementary school and an infant snuggling, crying, feeding, fussing, and cooing at home.  Someone reminded me the other day that when this newest baby is in kindergarten, my oldest will be in 8th grade. O.M.G.  Of course, I can do the math.  But seriously, just putting their age difference in that kind of perspective made me stop in my tracks.

Speaking of my two “bigs,” (Yes, I have now promoted my “baby” boy to a “big.” He’s almost five…tear!), they have been asking us for a new baby for more than a year.  They are absolutely over-the-moon happy about the pregnancy, and we talk about it as their baby, too.  They give my little baby bump kisses and hugs, and read it stories.  Which makes me cry.  Because I pretty much cry at anything theses days.  I know they are going to be the BEST helpers, protectors, and friends to this new little life.

So, here we go!  I can’t wait to share this fun, crazy pregnancy journey with you…stay tuned!
