Tiny Oranges Loves Tiny Truckers!

Tiny Oranges loves Tiny Truckers!

Well…October has rolled around quickly again this year (HOW???) and it’s always my cue to get my annual mammogram, doctor’s appointments, blood work, etc.  You know, all the appointments that just seem impossible to make in the summer?!  If you haven’t done yours…do it. Like, today.  Just make the call.

We love all things PINK this month in support of breast cancer awareness and wanted to share this Fighter hat, Survivor hat, and Fight Like a Mother hat from San Diego based Tiny Trucker Co.

All proceeds from the sale of their breast cancer awareness hats will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation

Use Tiny Truckers discount code TINY15 to get 15% off your entire order.

Tiny Trucker Co. was founded by a mom who started by making trucker hats for her baby and toddler. When friends started to ask her to make hats for their kids Tiny Truckers Co. was born and can now be found in over 100 retail locations!

What started as a line of hats for babies and toddlers grew into hats for mamas, families, bridal parties, and sororities. Super cut hats. My favorite thing as a trucker hat-loving mom myself is they  ACTUALLY fit my head nicely without that awkward oversized trucker hat shape!

The founder’s goal is to provide income opportunities for moms who want to stay home with their kids but also provide financially for their families. Every person employed by Tiny Truckers is a mom.

Use code TINY15 and get 15% off your entire order through 11/30/17.

Odysseo Debuts in Irvine

Disclosure: Media tickets provided to facilitate this review.

If any of you drive along the 405 and 133 intersection, you can’t miss the Big White Top under construction for the last month.

Every time we drive by, my boys are fascinated with “what they are building?!” When signs went up, we were thrilled to see it was Odysseo by Cavalia! For those of you not familiar, this show is known as the world’s largest traveling production with a cast of 65 horses, trainers, musicians and acrobats that produce one TRULY magical experience.

It is the work of Artistic Director, Normand Latourelle, a pioneer with Cirque du Soleil, and an incredible team of set designers, musicians, choreographers and costume designers.  Click here for more info on Odysseo Orange County.

I simply love horses.  Their grace, power, strength and pure beauty are really inspiring to me.  When I heard I had the chance to see this show with my family I was ecstatic.

I went in thinking the show would be, of course, a horse show (and it is!) but also SO much more. The performers interact with the horses in various acts that run the gamut. Some are exciting and fast, doing simply unbelievable acrobatics, and then some acts were beautiful and soft.

It was breathtaking to watch one trainer lead nine horses in choreographed formations around the arena with no leads or bridles.  Just gentle commands and a lot of praise.  Their connection to these horses (which have to train as long as SIX years to be in this production!) is seriously awe-inspiring and their true gratitude and love for these majestic animals really shines through.

Click here for some direct links to actual footage of the show for a preview of the magic…

We took my son and a friend, who are both 6, and they REALLY loved it.  There was a mix of equestrian, aerial artists in rings and silks (my son’s favorite part of the show), acrobats and more. We were mesmerized for the entire show.

The run time start to finish was about 2 1/2 hours, which included a 30 minute intermission. The Big White top is surprisingly comfortable and climate-controlled – we were told it costs $10,000 to cool or heat the tent for each production.  Parking was super easy and organized and they have plenty of food, snacks (hello Dipping Dots?!) , beer and wine for sale inside the tent.

Here are the boys practicing their horse acrobatic skills…future performers maybe?!  This cracks me up 🙂

A Mom’s Guide to a Faster Mac

5 easy tips to speed up your mac

If  you are like me, the age of digital photography and HD video have MORE than bogged down your computer which is why I am happy to share these 5 easy tips to speed up your Mac with you today.

I often feel paralyzed by the endless amounts of digital files and raw footage of HD video on my Mac.

I’m not ashamed to say I’ve officially filled up my ENTIRE 1TB iMac.  I have no more room to store anything and the machine runs like me on a Monday morning.  S L O W.

5 Easy Tips to Speed Up Your Mac

I had a recent One-to-One sit-down at the Genius Bar and I thought I should share a few SIMPLE tips that can help your computer run (almost) like new again.  Think of this guide as “Mac Clean Up for the Busy Mom.”

1.  Empty your iPhoto Trash

Did you know that if you delete a photo in iPhoto, it’s not ACTUALLY deleted from your hard drive?  Macs are smart that way and realize that there could always a chance you would want to recover a photo you accidentally deleted.

Find the TRASH icon on the left-hand menu in iPhoto click to empty it.  Then…those items will be moved to the Trash Can on your desktop so make sure to go to the Trash Can bottom right of desktop to empty that trash can as well.

Also, in the iPhoto menu, click -> Preferences and check the box “Turn On Item Counts”.  This will remind you in the future if there are any photos in your iPhoto trash for you to get rid of.  ***Note…if you are running Yosemite follow these directions…iPhoto is now just called “Photos”.  In the program click View—>Show Sidebar.  There is no more “Trash” folder there.  You can see recently deleted photos by clicking File—>Show Recently Deleted Photos.  It looks like those photos will live in the folder for approximately 30 days, then prompt you when they will be automatically deleted forever.  Just make sure you empty the Trash Can on your Desktop too!***

2.  Delete Your Download Cache

In simple language, this is when you view any video online, it’s actually stored on your hard drive.  Thus, taking up more space.

To delete, go to your Macintosh HD (your hard drive), click -> Users, go to your “Name”, then “Downloads”, click all those files and drag to the Trash Can.  Then, Empty Trash.  Notice a pattern?

3.  Disk Utility

Click on the magnifying glass and type “Disk Utility” then click ->Macintosh HD.  Click -> Repair Disk Permissions.  This, again, just deletes copies of unnecessary permissions.  I can’t really explain what that means because I didn’t understand myself, but it worked.  That’s all I can say about that.

4.  Photo and Video Storage

This was really my BIG problem area.  I had been storing all my videos and photos on my computer and backing up everything to Time Machine (if you haven’t done that yet…DO IT.  It’s so easy and automatically backs up your files for you).

Well then, I started the project of making home videos with all that footage.  As you can guess, only ONE got made in 6 years.  So, I had imported all that footage to iMovie.  What I learned going forward is to only store photos and videos on an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE  like this one (affiliate link).  Then, when I am going to actually work on a project I can import them into iMovie or iPhoto, complete the project, then delete the unnecessary raw footage (like 30 minutes of a baby eating in a high chair?!) and EMPTY THE TRASH.

5. Update your Operating System (or OS)

Go to the App Store and click -> Updates.  You will see there if your OS is completely up-to-date.  The most recent OS will contain performance enhancements and security improvements to keep your Mac running smoothly and safely.

The Genius Bar guy said it’s important to keep at least 10% of your hard drive free of content for optimal performance.  To find this out, click -> Apple icon, click -> “more info”  then -> Storage and you can see what’s on your Macintosh HD.

Hope these tips help you – do any other experts have any tips to add???

Personalized Board Books – New Title from I See Me!

* Disclosure – we were lucky enough to receive a sample book from I See Me! to facilitate this review *

We have been VERY big fans of the personalized children”s books from I See Me!  for a loooooong time.  In fact, Jennifer highlighted their products in a post back in 2008 when Tiny Oranges was just getting started… see the post here!

They are always my go-to gift for a cute, personalized gift for a baby shower, new baby or a little one’s birthday.  I am a big believer in practical gifts (and who doesn’t love a personalized gift?!) and when you combine that with reading??  WIN.  There are tons of titles to choose from and each page has the child’s name not only in the text, but in some of the pictures as well.

I See Me recently debuted a new title to add to their collection – It”s my NIGHT NIGHT Time! personalized board book. My little guy just LOVES his new book… “It’s GAVIN’s NIGHT NIGHT Time!” We are GIVING AWAY one below! make sure to enter!

I love that not only it helps him start to wind down, but that it teaches all the steps we do to get into bed.  Brush teeth, go potty (I wish….), lay our heads down, etc.  It’s a really cute story with adorable illustrations.

Plus, the quality of the pages is fantastic.  I especially love how these board books are (almost) indestructible. They are such beautiful keepsakes and the thick pages will really last a long time.  You can see the whole tour of the book here.  This book has quickly become a necessary book in the night-time rotation.

Here we are reading it before a nap…

Be sure to take a look at their site – there’s so much more than just books.  They have lunchboxes, puzzles, coloring books, placemats, stickers and growth charts.  Something for everyone. And SHHHHHHHHHH there’s an I See Me! secret sale going on now though the 4th…

…AND…we are going to be giving away one (1) copy of the personalized board book as well.  Just enter the Rafflecopter here! Good luck!

LEGOLAND’s new addition to Star Wars ™ Miniland

Star Wars Legoland

We were VERY fortunate to be able to attend the unveiling of the latest addition to the LEGO® Star Wars™ Miniland at LEGOLAND this past week.  Having two boys…ages 2 1/2 and 5 1/2, Star Wars™ is a BIG DEAL around here.

They are mesmerized by the movies and pretty much all things Luke, Vader and Yoda. We even donned the costumes this year for Halloween.  Who wouldn’t pass up a chance to be Princess Leia?! I think that having a husband (like so many of us!) that grew up in the original Star Wars™ era, dads really feel connected to their kids with the shared love of these films.

We’ve been to LEGOLAND several times before with our oldest but this was the first trip that the little one could actually enjoy it.  I just love everything about the park.

Legoland California

It has nice, wide open walkway spaces, tons of areas for little ones to explore and play and a really wide variety of rides.

There are also fantastic and HEALTHY food options, which at theme parks is sometimes hard to find.  We highly suggest the Pizza & Pasta Buffet for your trip.  They serve amazing salads, pasta and pizza (buffet-style, aka FAST) in a sit-down restaurant.  It’s super easy and quick if you are juggling strollers and multiple tired and hungry kids.

We usually spend the first half of the day exploring the rides and attractions, then a fair amount of time in Miniland in the center of the park.

Legoland Star Wars Miniland

It’a s great area to rest a little (that’s when you put the littles in a stroller) with a lot of benches for seating and to just marvel at the amazing LEGO® models of cities all over the United States.

The Star Wars™  area is quite impressive, depicting tons of characters and also mini models of full scenes from the movies.

We were lucky enough to get a sneak peek of the latest MASSIVE addition on March 4th…The Death Star.

It is HUGE…8-feet wide, 13-feet high, weighing more than 1,900 pounds and made out of more than 500,000 bricks.  It is incredible to see the features of the film scenes made out of the bricks.  Especially the famous trench run scene where Luke Skywalker maneuvers his X-Wing fighter through the combat zone to destroy the Death Star.  If you have boys, you KNOW what I’m talking about!

And the best part, is that adjacent to the model, guests are invited to construct their OWN starship at building stations with special LEGO® bricks.  My boys LOVED this part and I love how Legoland is so interactive and encourages creativity in our children.

Star Wars Legoland MIniland

I loved this picture with Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers.  Mind you, my oldest wouldn’t even LOOK at a costumed character one year ago so his silly nervous grin just makes me laugh!  And the little one was SO brave until the Stormtrooper talked to him.  This is the best group shot you can get with kids these ages, I guess!

Legoland Stormtroopers

So if you have the chance to hit up LEGOLAND soon…do NOT miss this new attraction.  It’s sure to be fun for kids…and Dads too.  🙂
