Sentimental Holiday Tradition

ornaments-

{This is a repeat post from last year … Guess you can say I am in reruns with all the holiday bustle!}

My mom did this for me growing up, and it was so special, I wanted to pass it on.  I am doing the same thing for my girls.

Every year, my mom would pick up one new ornament for my sister and I, and she kept a list of each ornament and the year.   When we were older, we would choose our own.   A lot of times we would pick one up on a vacation, or something to remember a special thing we did during the year, or something that represented what we were into or loved at the time.

Then, as adults when we moved out and got our first Christmas tree on our own, my mom packed up all of our own oraments (in my case dating back to 1974!) and gave them to us.  I will never forget the year that I was a “real” adult in my own apartment with my first Christmas tree.   Being able to fill it with my childhood ornaments brought back so many memories was so special to me.  Certainly more meaningful that going out and buying a slew of random ornaments to decorate my tree.

I hope you are all enjoying the holiday season!

  1. I love this! And I love the idea of having ones that were special to you at that time in your life. (Do they make a Yo Gabba Gabba one for my 2 year old?) I also love getting the little frame ornament with the year on it and putting in a pic of the kids. It’s fun to watch the family grow and see all the smiling faces on the tree!

  2. Such a cute idea! We did something similar growing up, and my brother and I actually had our own mini tree that we got to decorate every year with our ornaments (ones that we had purchased and all the ones that we had made in school).
