Teacher Anxiety

In parenting, I often ask myself, “Is this normal?!” probably more times than I would like to admit.

Whether it’s something my kids are doing that I find undesirable OR something I am feeling as a mom.

Emma starts 1st grade next Tuesday. We get to find out her classroom this weekend and I am having some major anxiety over which teacher she is going to get.

We were so lucky with our Kindergarten class last year. Awesome teachers and great group of kids and group of moms.  I think I am afraid we got a little spoiled.

Now that I have gone through a year of elementary school, I have seen firsthand just how IMPORTANT it is to have a stellar teacher.  I mean, it is everything! For all you teachers out there – I can’t tell you how much I admire you!

For 1st grade with the longer days and harder curriculum, I just so badly want her to end up in a classroom that she loves (and I love – who am I kidding?!) and it is killing me at this point because I have absolutely no control!!

So, I ask you mamas with elementary school age kids – is this NORMAL?! Do you get the same anxiety before finding out the classroom and teacher? I thought it would be easier this year because I have been through it before, but I am actually stressing out more.

Tell me I am not alone.  And if I am, please talk me off the ledge.

    1. Oh Michelle!! GOOD LUCK! I wish we found out tomorrow just so I could get it over with! I am sure all will be great!

  1. The teacher is 100% everything! 5 minutes in the teachers’ lounge and you will think so to. Some teachers are excited and creative and fall in love with their students, where as others are burnt out and unhappy – I actually heard a teacher refer to his students as little jerks. I am so glad I am in a position to pick and choose teachers for my company. Unfortunately I can’t pick and choose for my son who starts kindergarten next Wednesday – I am on edge too!

  2. We find out on Thursday and I can hardly stand it! You are definitely not alone – it’s all I can do to keep my mind off it. My husband has a lot of stressful projects going on at work but who our daughter gets as her second grade teacher is causing him the most stress and he’s losing sleep over it. If only our kids knew!

  3. I am already getting a little nervous as well, even though we don’t find out who my son’s teacher is until next Tuesday. The funny thing is, I am not at all concerned about the preschool teacher my daughter gets! Go fingure! Good luck!

    1. Leslie – I am so with you! My youngest starts preschool for the first time and who her teacher will be hasn’t even really occurred to me!

  4. As a mom and former teacher, put your anxiety aside. Show the teacher that you are confident about her/his abilities, take interest in the school and classroom, and volunteer. Your concerns will all be put to rest. Remember you had a great teacher last year. Hugs and Best Wishes!

    1. Thank you! I do volunteer at school and it is one of the best things ever – I highly recommend it to anyone who is fortunate enough to be able to. Being able to get to know the teacher and classroom by being in it is so helpful.

All will be great, I know. Thanks for your advice!!!

  5. Each teacher brings something different for your child! Just trust and know that it will be ok 🙂 And communicate with your daughter daily about school if any concerns come up! So exciting!
