The Benefits of Fiber & Kellogg’s FiberPlus Antioxidants Cereal

After my second pregnancy and especially when I turned 35 that same year, there was a definite shift for me in my attitude regarding health.

So over the past year and a half I have taken up running and Pilates and have made my health and my family’s health a top priority for me.

This is not easy, it takes time and hard work, but the payoff is WELL worth it!

At my last physical my doctor told me that most people don’t get nearly the amount of fiber in their diet that they should. Did you know a woman under 50 should get 25 grams of fiber per day?  Have you ever counted your fiber grams?  I honestly had never paid attention until she mentioned it to me.  It’s interesting to count how much you are getting in reality. You might be surprised to find out it is less than you might think.

The benefits of fiber in your diet include promoting bowel health and regularity, lowering blood cholesterol levels and can help aid in weight loss.  And as moms, who wouldn’t want help controlling their weight?!

If you find you are not getting the recommended amount, it is easy to make small changes to increase your intake.

This great article on fiber offers six tips on how to boost your fiber intake.

Tip #1?

Wake up to a high fiber breakfast or one with 5 or more grams of fiber and you will kick start your day and it can also help you manage your weight.   I know as busy moms sometimes we are tempted to wake up and GO GO GO and we tend to forget about breakfast.

But eating a nutritious, high fiber breakfast can help give you the energy you need to take on the day ahead!

Recently I was sent two different FiberPlus Antioxidants cereals to try by Kellogg’s which include high fiber content and are rich in antioxidant vitamins C & E.  You can also click here to visit the Kellogg’s website and find a Kellogg’s coupon for $1 off two boxes of the FiberPlus cereal!

The FiberPlus AntioxidantsYogurt Berry Crunch has 10g of fiber, twice the amount recommended for your breakfast and one serving contains 40% of your daily recommended fiber. Love this!  A 1 cup serving with ½ cup skim milk has 210 calories.

The cereal was sooooo yummy!  Crisp whole grain wheat and rice flakes with sweet yogurt and berry flavored clusters sprinkled throughout.  I loved the crunch mixed with the sweet flavor.  I also love knowing that I am getting a super high fiber breakfast.

I am careful to measure out a serving size and not pour a monster “teenage boy” portion however. If you pour a big bowl, sometimes you don’t realize how many calories you are actually consuming.

Yum!  High fiber breakfast and one cup of coffee = happy mommy!

The FiberPlus Antioxidants Cinnamon Oat Crunch has 9g of fiber and a ¾ cup serving with a ½ cup skim milk has only 150 calories and contains 35% of your daily recommended fiber.

This is the type of cereal you can grab a handful for a snack as well.  My two-year-old has food allergies to eggs and milk so finding cereals that are free of these ingredients can be difficult.

I was excited to see that she could have this one (with her Rice Milk of course!) and she loved it!  After taking a bite, she also wanted to offer me one too!

Something to note, both of these cereals do have sugar as the second ingredient (which is probably why they both taste SO good!) so it is not something that I will serve in heaping portions, but I am a believer of all things in moderation.

If you have a challenge getting your kids to eat fiber or if your kids need help with regulating their bowels, this is a great way to help things along!

Something important to mention, both these two cereals do not contain high fructose corn syrup.  This is important to me as a mom.

As moms I know we all strive to keep our families fit and healthy so I think being aware of your daily fiber intake as well as your kids’ fiber intake is something that can help boost your families overall health.

Now I am off to have a bowl of cereal and take on the day!

{Disclosure: This is a paid post sponsored by Kellogg’s.  I received one box of Berry Yogurt Crunch and one box of Cinnamon Oat Crunch to facilitate the review.  My opinions are my honest ones – as always!}

  1. Thank you for this post! I haven’t even heard of some of these cereals before. My family really loves organic brands but these look fairly healthy too.

  2. Definitely going to try these! I go for high fiber cereals as well, so these sound great! Another great way of upping your fiber intake- the English Muffins that are the ‘Light Multigrain.’ 100 calories and 8 grams of fiber!! (and 5 grams of protein!!)
