The Elf on the Shelf: A Cute Holiday Tradition for Kids

I have heard about The Elf on the Shelf for the past few years from friends, but it wasn’t until this past Saturday that our own Elf on the Shelf joined our family, and another cute holiday tradition for our kids was born.  So, please let me introduce you to Joy. Isn’t she cute?

How many of you used the phrase, “You better be careful how you are acting- Santa is watching!” before the calendar even turned to December? Um, that
would be me.

Which is why I find Joy to be such a brilliant idea because her job is to act as Santa’s scout during the month of December and report back to him each night on how my girls are behaving these days.  Thank you Elf on the Shelf creators – if I met you I would give you a BIG hug.

The Elf on the Shelf is sold in a complete gift set including a keepsake box, hardback book explaining how it works, and your own little Santa Scout.

The little elves are either boy or girl, with light eyes or dark eyes.

The cute skirt that Joy is sporting in the photo above sold separately (thank you Nana.)

When you receive your Elf, you name them, and then can register your Elf online where you will receive an adoption certificate and custom letter from Santa Claus himself.

Each night, you place your Elf on any shelf (or anywhere you like) where they will keep a watchful eye on your kids during the day.  Then each night the Elf flies back to the North Pole to give Santa a report for the day. When your Elf returns back to your house in the early morning hours, they will find a new hiding spot for your children to find when they wake up.

My girls LOVE Joy. The first night, my 6 year old was so excited to see where she would be the next morning, it seemed as if Christmas was coming early.

This is a darling gift idea for any child come December.  Many thanks to my mom, a.k.a. Nana, for purchasing this for my girls on December 1st. Joy has been a very exciting start to the holiday season! You can buy them online, or my mom found ours at a local Target store.  Happy holidays!

  1. I love the Girl version, she is so cute. My girls would have LOVED a girl (I wont tell them). My 6 year old jumps out of bed every day to find ours! 🙂

  2. We LOVE our elf “Jingles” and on pinterest there are some hilarious and very creative ideas for where and how to display your elf!

  3. My girls freaked over “Buddy” last year, I’m sure he’ll be back from the North Pole soon to check on us. Such a fun magical tradition!

  4. OK- so Buddy forgot to go to the North Pole last night and stayed in the same spot! Do your elves ever do that? I think he’s making his visit and landing somewhere new while the girls are at school today.
    Oops

    1. I think that you can just say that Buddy must have REALLY liked that spot so much for viewing that he returned two days in a row! Ha!

  5. My elf on the shelf moves by its self. Last year she duct taped my mom and dad to their beds to prove she isn’t a fake! 🙂 I love you, Ginger! 😀

  6. Well, I have a few elfs… My famaily has 1 elf on the shelf, 2 annalee doll elfs and 2 cute tiny baby elfs that were born last year by my elf, Ginger, and my friends elf, Rudolf. They have 2 baby elfs at their house and we have two at our house.

;D God I love my little elfs!!
