Tip on Getting Kids to Eat More Veggies

I am always looking for tips on getting kids to eat more veggies, and I have found one trick that works (sometimes) I wanted to share with you.  Can you share your tips with me below?

So here’s my tip on getting my kids to get more veggies.

In the 30 minutes or so before lunch or dinner when all of a sudden they go from playing to climbing up to the kitchen island exclaiming with intensity “Mommy! I’m HUNGRY!” I will put out a little plate of hors d’oeuvres consisting of a variety of pre-cut veggies and dip or hummus.

If they truly are that hungry, they will eat it, and mom is victorious.  If they are not that hungry, they will magically disappear and go back to playing until dinnertime. Most times however, they will eat at least some of the veggies before dinner.

I love to get the veggie consumption out of the way before dinner so I can go into the meal without stressing about getting some greens in them!

Like all things in parenthood, this works sometimes, not all of the time. But you have to take those times it does work for all it’s worth!!!

Your turn! Do you have any tips or tricks on getting kids to eat more veggies?

  1. I leave the washed cherub cherry tomatoes, blueberries, or other veggies and fruit on the counter and they run through the kitchen picking them one at a time.

  2. My favorite trick is puréed zucchini in scrambled eggs! Another delicious veggie recipe is adding puréed veggies in your homemade pasta sauce. These are great for toddlers. Older kids always enjoy ants on a log (celery, peanut butter and raisins).

  3. I sometimes do that, too! And when they were toddlers, I left a plate of veggies on their little table nearly all day, for grazing. Now, with school-age kids, it’s more of like, “You don’t have to clean your plate, just the veggies, to get X, Y, or Z.” 😉

  4. Thanks for the comments ladies. I do the same with my older daughter. If she wants a second helping of say, spaghetti or pizza, I tell her she can have it after she eats her veggies. That also works really well. I just want to teach her about eating a balance of foods…

  5. Oh my kids LOVE raw green beans. Every time we go to Sprouts or Growers market they stop and chow on them. I started to leave them in a cup in the fridge and they help themselves. Also, I always add shredded zucchini and carrots to my marinara, banana muffins and whatever else I think of.

  6. My latest trick is to make smoothies and put kale spinach and beets into them. Shhhh it’s a secret. I do add some blueberry honey to sweeten it a bit !

  7. I have a few tips:
1- I cook broccoli in chicken broth, makes it salty and yummy. My kids love it.
2- Juice (in juicer) spinach and apples, then blend in a banana, and ice! If u don’t have a juicer just make a smoothy with spinach, blueberries, banana and whatever milk. U can’t taste the spinach!
3- Pasta sauce with veggies in it or lasagna with veggies snuck in!
