Pediatric Cancer – A Survivor’s Story

I used to be a wedding planner in my past life. Although crazy and stressful at times, the thing I loved most about my job was the close relationship I formed with my clients over the course of the year (and sometimes more!) that we worked together.

And now thanks to Facebook, I have reconnected and stayed in touch with a lot of my brides. One such very special former bride of mine, Kristin, is now a married mom and recently contacted me about writing to raise awareness about a very important topic: pediatric cancer.

The year we worked together we were immersed in the world of linen colors and menu choices, so I had NO idea she went through something like this as a child.

Since most all of you reading this blog right now are moms yourself, I think I am safe to say that most all of us simply cannot IMAGINE if it were our child that was affected. Beyond even my comprehension.

Kristin wanted to share her story to shed light on pediatric cancer because it is the number one disease killer of children. More children die from cancer than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis and diabetes COMBINED. Did you have ANY idea?

But there is something you can do to help! Keep reading…but first, here is her story…

Regular Skin Checks Could Save Your Life

Several years back, my dad had a dark spot on his nose that was getting bigger. It wasn’t until someone blatantly asked him outright, “What’s that thing on your nose??” did he make an appointment to get it checked and see about getting it removed.

At the time, he was a little perturbed as he thought this person was quite rude for making the comment, but the rude remark likely saved his life. The spot on his nose was melanoma…

It’s taken me the week to process the event from last weekend but I am now ready to share all the amazing details and wrap up what has been an incredible experience.

Special thanks to Kim Harvey Photography for donating her time to photograph our event! All photos in this post are Kim’s unless otherwise noted. She did SUCH an amazing job! Thank you!

The PCRF Race Weekend Has Arrived!

It’s here! It’s here! The PCRF race weekend has finally arrived!

That is our team banner above. One of my team members, Calee, from eXist Designs was generous enough to donate it to our team. I think it turned out so cute and even though this picture is not the greatest, I love how the sun reflected and made stars on the top left, because that is how I feel… Team Tiny Oranges is going to sparkle & shine this Sunday!

On October 17th I was running a race and thought, “wouldn’t it be fun to put together a team for the PCRF Run Walk in May?” In the beginning when I was considering starting a team I pondered whether I could even get the 10 people I needed to be considered a “team.”

Well, today we are 111 team members strong, and, have raised over $23,200 dollars for pediatric cancer research. I still am in a little state of disbelief at what our team has accomplished. Eighty cents on every dollar raised for PCRF goes towards research so I can’t tell you how happy it makes me knowing the dollars we raised truly will make a difference.

The past six months of planning this event have been a journey for me; one I don’t think I was fully prepared for going into it. At times it has been exhausting and a little emotional. Correction, really emotional. It has also been…

Glam + Give at Drybar Newport Beach

So, I had the pleasure of getting my first blowout at Drybar in Fashion Island earlier this month before my date night and I am HOOKED. The concept of a blowout bar in itself is amazing, but then I experienced the atmosphere and service at Drybar Newport Beach, and I was literally blown away. Hee hee…

So, when my fellow Team Tiny Oranges teammate Kristin Bush, suggested getting Drybar on board to do a final hoorah fundraiser for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, I was thrilled they were willing to help us. And I am now even MORE in love with them knowing the company also has a big heart. Thank you Kristin for coordinating this!

Let me tell you a little about the Drybar experience…
