She Rocks Fitness [Giveaway!]

I have to be honest, just the word “bootcamp” scares me. It conjures up images of a big man in my face yelling at me as I am in tears trying to do 100 push ups or something. So when one of my mommy readers wrote to us raving about She Rocks Fitness, a women’s fitness bootcamp which she credited to getting her back into shape after baby, I was curious but also a little concerned about the bootcamp aspect when she told me I really had to take a class to see for myself.

But then I learned that the workouts are only 35 minutes and I thought, “I can do anything for 35 minutes.” Which I did last week and it was AWESOME!!!

She Rocks Fitness is the brain child of personal trainer Michael Sperling (soooo not scary and no yelling, except for encouragement) who told me he built the business based on objections or excuses to why women didn’t workout. Namely…

1. No time. 2. No money. 3. No idea what to do. 4. No accountability.

Any of those sound familiar?

So let’s talk about the “I have NO time” thing. As a mom I think that must be the number one challenge, but 35 minutes makes it feasible!

Let me tell you what those 35 minutes entail.

It was hard, I am not going to lie, I was sweating big time and my heart rate stayed up the entire time.  While we were doing the strength training exercises and intervals, my heart was beating like I was doing 35 minutes of hard cardio.

I asked Michael about this afterwards, and learned this is the key to its effectiveness.  It’s called high intensity interval training, which raises your metabolic rate and helps to burn fat after the workout is over. What mama doesn’t love that?

And even though it was hard, the workout went FAST. I found myself surprised when he said, “last exercise!”

The second objection, being money, is another area where he wanted to help.

In this setting you get the benefits of working out with a personal trainer, without paying one-on-one prices.

And now a little word on accountability. Because the way they do it is very cute.

On the wall, there is a picture of every women that works out there with names, and above all the pictures is a huge sticker chart like you would make for a preschooler! When you are done with your workout, you put a little sticker in the box for the date so you can track how frequently you are going. Incidentally, so can everyone else.  Very clever Michael…

I found the workout to be extremely dynamic and because it is a gym for women, you don’t have that meat market factor. I can’t tell you how much I dislike that about other gyms. The women are all there with the same goal – to get in shape – and it was obvious they love supporting each other as well. I loved it!

It truly is for women wanting to make a commitment to get results. You should watch the success stories on their website. Click here for a video of his clients.  Real women, putting in real hard work, getting real results. I find that real inspiring!

She Rocks Fitness invites you to join them at a free family event this weekend to check out the facility, meet the trainers and learn more.

Resurrection Lutheran Preschool Huntington Beach

Looking back, I had no idea just how important choosing the right preschool would turn out to be when touring schools for my oldest daughter a few years ago.

But after experiencing the transition from preschool to now Kindergarten, I realize that a child’s preschool experience plays a huge part in their Kindergarten readiness. And I am not just talking about academically, but socially and emotionally as well.

So at this tender stage when these little precious humans are learning so much about how to interact with others in a classroom setting, to me, it is important to carefully consider the right preschool for your family. Our preschool truly has become like a second home to my daughters. And you want that home to be filled with loving people that want the best for your child!

Resurrection Lutheran Preschool is a Christian preschool in Huntington Beach that was brought to Tiny Oranges by one of my readers, Dana, and the school subsequently became one of our OC Biz Guide Sponsors. You can visit their listing under “Preschools.”

Offering programs for children ages 2 years 6 months through pre-kindergarten, they have 2-day (Tuesday/Thursday), 3-day (Mon/Weds/Fri) and 5-day classes (Mon-Fri) from 9am – 12pm with an optional “Lunch Bunch” available Monday – Thursday from 12pm – 1:30pm.

And, for those of you who stress about this part, they do NOT have to be potty trained to be in the program *sigh of relief!*

They also have a six-week summer program which is 3 days a week (Tues-Thurs). I think this is an awesome summer schedule to allow you to have your Mondays and Fridays open for travel. This year, the summer program runs from June 19th – July 26th.

When chatting with Dana on the phone (by the way she is completely darling and I felt like we were BFF’s) I asked her what it was she loved so very much about this program and these were the key points:

Small class sizes! With an approximately 1:6 ratio, teachers are able to provide individual attention and small group interaction.

* The loving, caring and supportive teachers who are dedicated to a child’s successful transition to Kindergarten.

* The school’s colorful, creative and cozy environment.

* The unique daily music enrichment program with a piano teacher.

* Twice monthly chapel.

* Their wonderful Preschool Director who has over 35 years experience with preschool aged children.

* The emphasis on making sure every child is academically, emotionally, socially and physically ready for the big step to Kindergarten.

* Affordable. Now I know this is very subjective, but you can click here to see the tuition rates and if it would be affordable for your family. Siblings receive a 10% discount and they also offer a 10% discount for full payment at the beginning of the school year which roughly equals 1 month of tuition free. Nice!

My biggest piece of advice to anyone looking into preschools is to go out there and TOUR them!  I think I visited about 6 different preschools that all seemed good, but it wasn’t until my 6th stop did I know I had found “The One” for us.

You will get the same feeling.

Enrollment for Summer and Fall 2012 is coming up on March 21st, 2012 at 8:45am, so you will want to contact them ASAP to get more information if you are interested in looking at this school. You are also welcome to stop by anytime on weekdays between 9am – 12pm for a tour.

Visit their website or contact Director Judy Giem via email at judy.giem {@} gmail.com or 714.962.3919 for more information.

Skin So Sweet Sugaring Giveaway

see more by

As of a month ago I had never even heard of “sugaring” hair removal – have you?!?

One of my best girlfriends recently “got sugared” by Cheryl Callahan at Skin So Sweet in Huntington Beach and raved about the results.   My friend had told Cheryl about me, and she was SWEET enough to invite me in for a sugar service to see what it is all about!

Ironically, when I got the email from her I happened to be getting my hair done by Tera at Ty Alexander Salon.  Since Tera is in the beauty industry, I asked her if she had ever heard of “sugaring.”   Tera flipped because she goes to Cheryl for sugaring!  Small world.  She told me “DO IT! You will LOVE it!”  Equal sugar enthusiasm now by two women – I was intrigued!

If you too are intrigued after this post,  make sure to read below on how YOU can win a sugaring too! And, no better sugaring hair removal place in Orange County than Skin So Sweet!

So, me and my “haven’t been waxed in longer than I can remember furry eyebrows” paid Cheryl a visit.  It was long overdue.  Guess I have had things like surviving the first year of my second child’s life holding me back from regular brow maintenance!

But, first things first.  What exactly IS sugaring you might be thinking?

It turns out it is a method of hair removal that dates back to 1900 BC – back to the the Cleopatra days when smooth skin in ancient Egypt was a sign of youth and beauty. You can read more details about it here.  I thought this fact was very interesting.

It is a method to remove unwanted hair, similar to waxing.  You can sugar your brows, face, underarms, legs, bikini… basically anywhere you want to remove hair.   The difference is that the sugar mix is completely natural & organic and made of sugar (of course!), lemon juice and water.  The mixture is heated to make a paste that sticks to the hair without attaching to the skin. It is applied in the direction of the hair growth and then lifted off to remove the hair entirely.  It leaves your skin super smooth and the regrowth is supposed to be softer each time. And, since the paste can be applied at room temp or lukewarm, it prevents burning.

It is also very hygenic,  because, well, the sugar “glob” {for lack of a better word! } used on you is {obviously} only used once,  then tossed.

It actually seemed really tricky to be able to master this technique and Cheryl told me it requires a lot of training.  It was apparent she was a sugaring guru! She shared with me that sugaring does take a little longer than waxing, but I had a feeling that she invests that extra time as well, because she also seemed to be a perfectionist.

She spent soooooo much time on my brows and while we were chatting she told me she really has a PASSION for her work.  I love it when women find a way to do what they love for a living.  She is also a mommy of two young girls so it was fun to chat about our kids too.

My brows looked so amazingly good when she was done! The perfect arch and shape.  And, I was completely thrilled with the process because the sugar didn’t leave me with those red, irritated stripes on my brow bone like I used to get with waxing.   It was way gentler on my skin.

Since we were leaving for Rancho Las Palmas a few days later, and a bikini was in my near future, I also got a bikini sugar.  My friend told me that sugaring did not hurt her at all, but I have to say although the pain was a little less than waxing it was still uncomfortable at times.  Just keeping it real!  I guess anytime you are pulling a hair out from the root there is going to be some pain involved!  But it was not bad at all and Tera told me that it gets less and less painful each time you do it.   I will have to see when I go back for my second sugar because now I am hooked.

You can click this link to visit the Skin So Sweet website and watch a video on sugaring and what the process entails.  It is actually quite interesting!
