How to Choose the Right Mattress for Your Child

see more by

Recently we found ourselves in need of new mattresses for both of our girls. My youngest Morgan, newly three-years-old, was ready to move out of her crib into her first big girl bed, and my six-year-old Emma, was ready to transition from her still toddler-ish room and old low-quality, twin mattress into a “going to be a 1st grader” room.

So when Serta contacted me about being a part of their blogger campaign for 2012, which included complimentary mattresses for review to help write about our experiences, the timing couldn’t have been better.

Now that my husband and are I sleeping on our Serta iComfort mattress (also complimentary provided by Serta) and KNOW firsthand the difference a quality mattress makes to your sleep, it just killed me every night to lay on Emma’s terrible mattress when reading her books before bed and feel the innersprings coming through the top of the mattress. She had no idea – but I did. Click here to read about the difference our new mattress has made to our lives.

To know that both of my girls were going to get to experience blissful sleep on a Serta mattress made me SO happy. But now we had a task at hand – and that was choosing the best mattress for our kids. As it turns out, there was a lot to think about!

I am sure many of you at some point will have to purchase a new mattress for your child so I wanted to provide some personal shopping tips that helped us, along with input from the experts at Serta.

How to Choose the Right Mattress for Your Child

The first thing to decide is what size do you want?  I immediately thought twin for both, because they are so little. Especially for my three-year-old, it seemed like a natural progression to go from a crib mattress to a twin.

But given the fact that we were going to be receiving high quality mattresses that will likely last them until they go off to college, possibly even longer, I had to think long term.

Even though my three-year-old might look small in a full size bed now, 10 years from now she will be 13, and who knows, she could be 5’8″ by then (I was!)

Some things to consider when selecting the mattress size:

1. How much space do you have in your child’s room? Could it fit a full size or larger?

2. Will you be “handing down” this mattress to a younger sibling at some point? Is there a chance it will it be moving rooms?

3. Will you want to consider bunk beds or will your kids share a room at some point?

4. Could you benefit from being able to use a larger bed or double up kids in a larger bed when guests visit to free up more sleeping space? How about for sleepovers?

5. Do you prefer to invest in a quality mattress so you don’t have to upgrade at some point if/when they outgrow it in a few years?

If you answered “yes” to questions #1 and #5, I would recommend to buy the biggest size mattress their room will accommodate that still makes sense space-wise.

Most children’s furniture stores now have great full size bed options and custom shops like Newport Cottages can also custom make a children’s style bed into a queen, even larger, if that is the direction you want to go.

This was Serta’s expert advice on choosing the size,

“A larger sleeping surface allows for more ‘room to stretch’ during sleep. For kids that are active sleepers, meaning they shift positions often, a larger mattress may help keep them more comfortable and help them stay asleep in the event they shift positions during sleep. The biggest benefit of a larger mattress for a child is longevity. A good mattress can stay with your child through childhood.”

Once you decide on the size you want, next you have to decide on the type of mattress you want for your child.

The traditional innerspring, like the Serta Perfect Sleeper, is a popular choice for children. You can also consider the (now famous on my blog) iComfort memory foam mattress, or the iSeries, which is a hybrid of innerspring and memory foam.

No matter what kind of mattress you select, the most important thing to ask about is does it offer proper support? A mattress with a good support infrastructure will alleviate pressure point build-up which can cause tossing and turning and restless sleep.

From there, the level of firmness or plushness is totally personal preference.  I suggest having your children go into to the store and test them out themselves. Of course, it is helpful to narrow it down to a handful that fit in your budget before giving them free reign to chose!

We took both of my girls mattress shopping and it was quite an enjoyable event. The “rest test” was not so effective with my (then) 2 1/2 year old who thought the game of musical mattresses was one VERY fun game, but my six-year-old, after laying on probably 10 different beds, knew the one she thought was the “coziest” without a doubt.

I thought it was really interesting to see that she had a strong opinion of the exact mattress that felt best to her at such a young age.

Expert advice from Serta,

“Today’s mattresses combine advanced support systems with a varity of “comfort layers”, meaning that you can still get the support you need from a softer mattress. We suggest you look for a quality mattress with proper support, with comfort materials designed to provide pressure relief. This is important to help reduce tossing and turning which can disrupt sleep.”

So now that you have selected your new mattress, and maybe invested a little more, you want to make sure you get the most years you can out of your new bed.

Serta advises,

“The most important mattress care tip is this – use a liquid resistant mattress pad or cover.  This will keep the mattress cleaner and healthier and insure that your warranty remains in tact and prevent the comfort layers from being impacted.  There are many options out there made from breathable materials, so the mattress pad or cover won’t cause heat build up.”

Stay tuned for another post on the mattress we selected for our girls and how we came to the decision.

These new mattresses started a pretty big home project that entailed moving three of our bedrooms and a VERY fun redesign of them all. It was a project that we needed to do, and these mattresses were the perfect push to get us started. I can’t wait to show you the results.  Coming soon!!!

An iComfort Mattress Review ~ One Year Later

see more by

Serta changed my life.  I am not being dramatic. It’s the honest truth. In 2011 I was selected to be a part of a program for bloggers which included a complimentary mattress for review, and it has truly changed my life.

I am sure you must be asking yourself, “how on earth could a mattress company change her life, right!?!?” But, please let me explain.

It has now been a little over a year since my husband and I have been sleeping on our iComfort Prodigy mattress so I thought it would be fitting to do an iComfort update because when I look back, it has truly made an remarkable difference in our lives.

For those of you who weren’t following my blog last year when I originally did my iComfort mattress series, you can click here to read about their unique (FABULOUS) memory foam, here for my original review and here for my review of the motion perfect adjustable base.

I love my mattress so much that I feel the need to tell anyone that will listen about how amazing this bed is.  In fact, I happened to be walking in the mattress section of Macy’s Home Store the other day, and noticed a man looking at the iComfort mattresses talking to the sales guy. I overheard him asking how they were, and I couldn’t help myself, so I walked over, apologized for interrupting, but said, “This mattress is LIFE CHANGING!!” And again, let me disclose we were provided our mattress for free, but I mean EVERY single word.

I thought the sales guy might hug me. Or he might have thought I was a little crazy, but I couldn’t help myself because it’s the truth!

And here is WHY it is so AMAZING...

Before I slept on our iComfort mattress, on average, I would remember waking up at least one, if not two times a night. And often, I would have a problem going back to sleep right away. In the morning, I would typically wake up still feeling tired, even if I had gotten 8 hours of sleep. But looking back, it was 8 interrupted hours due to the tossing and turning.

Now, when sleeping on our iComfort mattress, 90% of the time, I go to sleep and do not wake up until it’s morning. Yes, I will sleep for a solid stretch of  an average of 8 hours. And it is AWESOME!!!! I now wake up earlier on my own, like 6:15am or so, and even have a nice hour to myself before the kids wake up. Even better, when I wake up, I feel rested and ready to start the day.

I fully attribute the fact that I am getting this solid, quality sleep to the iComfort Cool Action Memory Foam, which isolates movement. When my husband rolls over or gets up earlier or goes to bed later, his movement doesn’t wake me up. This has been the number one reason I think this bed is so incredible.

When you wake up night after night of quality sleep, it begins to affect other areas of your life. I exercise more, I am healthier and overall I have more energy. And all of these things work together to make for a better well being. Now I am not saying that the mattress talks to me and encourages me to exercise, but because I wake up early in the morning not feeling tired, I have more energy to get my workouts in.

I don’t think you can underestimate the importance of sleep (quality sleep) to your health and well being.

My husband has also noticed a BIG difference. On our old mattress, most mornings he would wake up with an achy back. His back pain completely went away when we got our iComfort. He loves the bed so much that when we ever sleep away from our home, he will always mention how he can’t wait to get back home to our bed. And I feel the same way. It is the BEST BED EVER.  Again, let me disclose, we were provided a mattress for review by Serta complimentary.

Before getting this mattress, I would probably have not have even considered a memory foam mattress. I had heard they could sleep hot, were rock hard, and I don’t know, and it seemed a little foreign to me after sleeping on an innerspring mattress for my whole life.

But the iComfort is NOT hot, thanks to the Cool Action Gel in the memory foam, and our model is plush, yet also super supportive, far from being rock hard. After sleeping on our iComfort Prodigy for the year, I can safely say, I will never sleep on another type of bed again, and I am a Serta memory foam fan for life.

If you are in the market for or need a new mattress, I can’t more highly recommend you find a store by you and go and test them out for yourself. And if I happen to see you in the store, don’t be surprised if I come over and tell you myself just how much I love this bed.

Serta also offers a 120-day in home trial, where you can sleep on your new mattress for a minimum of 30 nights, and if you are for any reason not satisfied within 120 days, you can exchange or return it (policies set by local retailer, ask your store for details.)

And don’t even get me STARTED on the Motion Perfect Adjustable Base.  That is a whole other post on it’s own. Stay tuned.

We were blessed beyond words to receive this mattress complimentary from Serta as a result of my involvement in their Blogger program last year when the iComfort mattresses first came out, but knowing what I know now, if my husband and I would have had to purchase a new mattress, I would have saved our pennies until we could afford to buy it ourself. It is worth every single dollar.  It’s that good.

So, when Serta contacted me again about working with them for their 2012 program, I almost jumped through my screen yelling, “YES!” Because when I love something this much, it is my absolute joy to be able to share it with the world.

Nighty night friends, thanks for listening to my Serta iComfort love affair!

[Disclosure: I was a participant of the Serta Blogger Program last year and received my iComfort mattresses compliments of Serta. For the program for 2012 I will also be receiving additional products for our household for review. All opinions are my 100% honest ones, as always!]

Best, Softest, Coziest Bed Sheets Ever!

see more by

Up until recently, I have never found bed sheets that I absolutely LOVE. In fact, I have spent quite a bit of money on high thread count sheets that really weren’t that great.  When we got our new dreamy iComfort bed, I needed to buy new sheets since we went from a Cal King to a King and that is when I discovered the best, softest, coziest bed sheets EVER!

It happened by accident actually.  I bought a set of the Bed Bath and Beyond Pure Beech Sateen Sheets for our guest bed first. After I washed them and felt how amazingly soft they were, I went straight back to get a King set for us.

They didn’t carry King size in the store, so I had to order online. I have a  Bed Bath and Beyond tip to share! You can bring in your 20% off coupon that you probably get in the mail into the store and can have an associate order it online for you and apply the 20% off coupon, which is what I did.

For such luxurious sheets, they are not that expensive, ranging from $79.99 – $99.99 per set. With the 20% off, it’s not a bad price for the best sheets you will ever sleep on.

They are flipping amazing. Soooooo soft and cozy. They just sort of drape over you like silk. I have never felt sheets so soft in my entire life. I wash and dry them on “delicate,” and I have only had them a short time so I can’t tell you how they hold up, but from first impression, so far so good.

Now, time for a nap…have a fabulous weekend!
